A week before I started my health journey back in 2017, I remember feeling a bit discouraged and thinking: this is not going to work, nothing has ever worked… why should this be any different?
I almost forfeited one of the most life-changing decisions I’ve ever made. I wouldn’t have lost 75 pounds; wouldn’t have increased my energy; wouldn’t have reduced my joint pain; I most definitely wouldn’t have inspired my husband to lose 85 pounds and you wouldn’t be reading this right now.
Why helping people get healthy is so important to me
Ever since I can remember, I have been fascinated by the body’s ability to heal itself. Before I could even read, I remember flipping through the illustrations of some old medical guide my grandparents had kept around the house. I had no real idea of what I was looking at, those pictures of doctors setting splints for broken bones and packing wounds, but I remember being amazed by them.
When I was six years old, my teacher asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up and I proudly said, “a doctor!” She then passed out worksheets based on our choice and I happily colored the doctor with his doctor’s bag. I remember thinking about how much I wanted to be able to help people get well.
I was also intrigued by natural and plant-based remedies that my grandmother often recommended whenever my brother or I had a cold or some other ailment. She always knew what to do for us and it always worked. She is the reason why I still take echinacea to this day.
For years my career goal was to be a doctor until it was almost time to graduate from high school. By then, things had changed so drastically in my life, I couldn’t really see how I could afford the money or the time investments that medical school would require of me. I was a teen mom and already married by the time I graduated high school. Going away to medical school seemed impossible to me then.
So I did what I thought would be the next best thing, I set out to become a teacher. By then I had developed a love for writing, so chose to teach English. I love teaching, but I never lost my interest in the medical profession.
Then one day, it hit me. I was watching a documentary that talked about the flaws of traditional medicine and how the body can be healed through nutrition and functional medicine. I realized, if I had become a doctor, I would’ve been trained in traditional medicine and perhaps would never have discovered the kind of healing that comes from giving the body what it needs.
I discovered that amazing things happen when we eat healthy foods, get enough sleep, activity, and water. I love helping people discover how to combine that with emotional well-being so that they can be healthy, happy and whole.
